To continue to push myself to produce, I'm currently taking MATS: Assignment Bootcamp. A free 6-month course offered through Lilla Rogers, not only does it allow me to make more art for my portfolio, but it pushes me to try new things. The basic premise of the course is that you have an entire month to produce a portfolio worthy piece. Being the mother of 2 young children, this was perfect for me. The beginning of the month starts with a "mini" assignment to get you loose and warmed up. Once the main assignment is given, you already have a ton of motifs to work with.
For January our first prompt for the mini was Eduardian Brooches. This was so out of my comfort zone, at first I wasn't into it. But as time went on, it really allowed me to take my time, open up and just try new things. At the beginning of week 2 we were given the actual assignment, which was to create a journal. The great thing about this experience is that not only do you end up with a nice finished piece, you also have many different iterations of that piece that can be tweaked and used for other things as well. Build a collection. Create specialized products such as journals, plates or stationary. The possibilities are really endless.
Take a look at a few versions and my final piece:
